Design for Good - Project 4

Competitor review

After drafting several problem statements, I proceeded to conduct competitor reviews. Initially focusing on the idea of a food donation reward scheme app, I completed five competitor reviews for this concept. However, subsequent statistical research revealed a prevalent issue of people not adjusting recipes to the correct number of servings, leading to excess waste. This prompted a shift to the idea of a recipe reduction app, and I crafted a corresponding problem statement before commencing competitor reviews.

On my first go at this, on my other idea, I had done the competitor review on my problem statement board and done it in a kind of mind map like design, however, I didn’t think this looked neat and professional enough, so for the second time round, I decided to make it into a table, which was a lot easier to produce, and is much easier to take and find information from when looking at the table as everything is in the same columns etc. For the first competitor reviews I did for my first idea, I looked into apps/websites such as ‘ResQ Club’, ‘Too Good to Go’, ‘Olio’, ‘Freecycle’ and ‘Freddie’.

First go at a competitor review – before changing my idea

I did some research using both Chatgpt and google to research varying existing apps which are in the same realm and have the same kind of idea, so that I can both gain insights into what other companies have done, and also pinpoint areas in which I would maybe do something or design something differently. For example, in a few of them I realised some font styles and colour choices I won’t be using as I just don’t think they are effective.

Upon changing my idea, I delved into competitor reviews for the new concept, examining apps like ‘ResQ Club,’ ‘Yummly,’ ‘BigOven,’ ‘SideChef,’ and ‘PrePear.’ A comprehensive table was created, encompassing founding dates, mission statements, environmental aspects, functionalities, target audiences, popularity, and funders. This meticulous analysis provided valuable insights into design considerations, identified existing features, and sparked ideas for differentiation.
