Today I had my first VR workshop. It started off by Will explaining the headsets and how they worked. The Meta Quest headsets are a very expensive piece of equipment made by Facebook. The assistant used the headset which was projected onto the TV as Will talked us through what she was doing. I was really amazed by what you could do as the only VR headsets I was used to were the ones where you can insert your phone. The VR headsets we were using were non tethered, not connected to the laptop and don’t require a PC. Although the tethered are much better, the non tethered are starting to become just as good. As told in the workshop, these headsets can help UX designers when creating prototypes and are really slowly trying to be part of a normal working lifestyle, for people to use them to do work. As of right now it is more of a recreational activity however really helpful when it comes to UX.

After the briefing of how to use the headsets we were able to use them. I started off by drawing my boundaries in which I can work in and began experimenting with different environments on the painting app, tools and getting used to how the hand sets work. I was really impressed by the ability of drawing in 3D and was able to use the controllers to move my doodles and work around what I was creating. Although my experimentation in the app looked a mess, it proved I had lots of fun. I tested out how to use the camera to created GIF’s, using rulers, different paintbrushes, mirrors and more! The ability to use transparency mode at the same time was really cool as what I was doodling was in colour but I could see other things outside the headset in black and white. As a whole I really enjoyed this workshop and getting to grips with the software. I’m really looking forward to use these in the future maybe for other projects and learning how it’s incorporated into UX.
