Don Norman’s Design Principles

Below is a copy of the seven design principles, which are used throughout User Experience Design:

  1. Discoverability – ability for something to be discoverable, users should be able to locate their own way around a system.
  2. Feedback – make it clear to the user that an action has been taken, and what has been accomplished.
  3. Conceptual Models – a useful explanation of how something works. This is used subconsciously and intuitively, in order to systemise processes.
  4. Affordances – attribute of something that allows people to know how to use it.
  5. Signifiers – aspects of visual design design that represents potential and intended use, and to also show system status.
  6. Mapping – having a clear relationship between controls and the effect they have on the World. Controls should feel as natural as possible.
  7. Constraints – Having a limited range of interaction possibilities for the user, in order to simplify the interface and guide the user to the appropriate next action.
