AI Technical Report Seminar

In this seminar, Dave discussed some new and up-and-coming AI software, and also how Sci-Fi is becoming a reality – quickly.

What is AI?
  • “‘AI’ has become a shorthand term for a range of Machine Learning (ML) applications. This is where a piece of software teaches itself rather than following explicit instructions.
  • In November 2022, ChatGPT, a large language model (LLM) developed by OpenAI became the most rapidly adopted new software launch in history”.
What is it not?

I found this section of the lecture interesting. Some points that Dave covered was the fact that AI is not:

  • Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
  • Factually Accurate
  • Citable
  • Free
  • Sentient/ conscious (yet)

The last point I found intriguing, as for my research report I am studying Artificial Empathy, so this made me think about how computers are trying to seem empathetic (for numerous different reasons) but actually aren’t. I took this further and wrote about it in my essay!

Adobe

Something exciting that Dave showed the class was the integration of AI in Adobe software (in Sensei and Firefly). The two promo videos which flaunted the new software were really cool, and and the whole class looked amazed about its potential. I personally cannot wait for it to come out for the general public!

How we can use AI in our own essays

A main topic of the presentation was how we can actually use AI in our own dissertations, without becoming reliant on it.

In short:

  • Don’t use AI as my own work
  • Don’t cite it as a reliable author
  • Do use it as a helpful guide
  • Do fact-check it with other sources
  • Do be transparent about the use of AI
  • Do reference AI software in my bibliography.
