Further Reading – Applying discounts & promotions on e-commerce websites

In order for users to use promotions successfully, it must communicate its promotions effectively throughout the site and make sure that communication on how users can easily get the deal is easy to understand.

If one is offered on a site, allow users to automatically apply it by clicking it.
  • Automatically apply discount ads to the users cart, when they interact with them.
  • Make sure users can can apply voucher codes easily – make them able to copy and past them.
  • Display all offers within shopping cart page.
  • Allow users to apply discounts directly by interacting with banners that promote offer.
  • Let users browse offers in shopping cart.
When using discounts as an incentive for actions (signing-up for mailing list) provide the discount immediately.
  • If codes are sent by email – make sure they are sent immediately.
  • In order to avoid risk of user leaving site – apply the coupon directly to their cart.
  • Don’t lose trust through being slow to provide a discount.

Include coupon-code fields as core part of shopping cart and checkout pages.
  • People with coupons want to enter them on the site ASAP.
  • Provide a space for coupon codes before checkout, as they can check it is valid before entering personal info.
  • Place to enter coupon should be easy to find – close to the payment info and above/before checkout button.
Show any discounts applied to items in shopping cart
  • Helpful when users can clearly see what items the coupon had been applied to. Users are suspicious of their discount is not clearly listed.
  • Special restricts with coupons should be clearly communicated also (during checkout is a good time).

Reflect any specials, deals or discounts in payment total
  • Coupon codes should be validated and reflected in the cost before requesting payment info.
