Project 4 – Design For Good

How many products designed to help us live sustainably are out there? Initially, I thought there might be a limited number, but my research revealed a wide array of options. However, many of these products seem to have an “expiry date” in terms of their relevance; they lack the latest updates, bug fixes, or they’re simply abandoned in the depths of the internet. This situation raises the question of why this happens and what can be done to extend the lifespan of future sustainable products. I’ve briefly considered this issue further in the development of my project.

After conducting a general brainstorm and researching global environmental issues, I decided to focus on littering. As an audiophile and avid fan of music festivals and the entertainment sector, I was inspired by the Burning Man festival in Nevada. Burning Man is a week-long, large-scale event centered on “community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance,” held annually in the desert. The festival is driven by Radical Inclusion, welcoming everyone without prerequisites, and promotes self-expression and the rejection of corporatism and capitalism. The main objective of the event that I focused on is the “leave no trace” movement and communal effort. Essentially, participants actively engage in organizing the event and attractions, as well as in closing, clearing, and leaving the area untouched. This led me to choose my subject of interest: Littering/Recycling.

During my research, I recognized the scale of the global impact of littering on ecosystems. I conducted competitive research, identifying existing problems and solutions, which led me to further conclusions.
