Audio in presentations

Voice over

  • a poor image with good audio is watchable
  • A good image with poor audio is a lot harder to watch

The 3 Cs

Clean

  • don’t record in a loud environment
  • A large space creates a reverb
  • background sounds will be picked up (try to avoid this)
  • Record in a small quiet space with padded walls
  • Or a bedroom -(under a duvet helps)
  • ideally use a good microphone
  • generally the bigger the mic the better the sound
  • Mic handling noise(try to avoid)

Close

  • Mic should be around 15cm from the voice
  • Too close – distorted and bassy
  • Too far – quiet and reverted

Clear

  • re-take any mistakes
  • Get several takes with different emphasis
  • Make sure your voice is relaxed
  • As they relax, they’ll get louder and clearer
  • Have water available

Music

  • Think about what would fit with what you’re designing
  • Carefully of copyright
  • Avoid music with lyrics
  • Don’t let the music overpower the voice over
  • Use “ducking” lower the music level during voiceovers
  • Graphics hub – audio libraries (has copyright free music)
