This was a short uni week for me as I was gone thursday and friday on holiday to Portugal. Despite that, I continued to have great conversations around UX and design with my friends that helped aid me in brainstorming for project 4 and get an idea of the UX design happening in Porto (plus, what could use some improving).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday<\/strong> I went to the stuff of life show at The Sainsbury Center which is focused on artists responding to climate change and sustainability. I wrote some ideas I personally had post show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monday<\/strong> was lecture with Johnny once again. I was able to present more decision specifically stemming from consumer research. We chatted more about fonts and aesthetic decisions for the website this time around; speficially using fonts that influence how you are wanting people to feel. I recognised that while I had done a lot of research now around environmental activists and what they would interact with, I needed to continue research into the wine tours so I could ultimately design an experience that skewed heavily towards environmental learning but also had the lightheartedness and enjoyability of a tour so the eco-warriors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From my reading on good design as well as human design, and my personal approach to goal making, I am constructing thrill “pillars” that I want my project to be focused around (outside of the initial constraints of food\/bev and aco warriors. I want this experience to feel: embodied — they feel a personal connection to their individual experience to the land, to the earth and ultimately towards influencing climate change towards a brighter direction. playful — reminding those who are constantly acting for change that there are ways to engage which are fun and enjoyable yet still make a difference. soft — to offer space away from the hard work of activism and possibly strict ways of co-existing with the earth in an incredibly sustainable matter. With the growing urgency of climate change, this experience continues the education and engagement but approaches it in a way that recharges activists, giving them a deserved break that still appeals to their overall interests, values, and lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday<\/strong> was spent doing more figma work and reading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wednesday <\/strong>I made a shift in my external class responsibilities. I was on the editorial team for the NUA Magazine, Storehouse, and now I am a part of the online team. I will be working with Rob to develop a new website using UX frameworks, as well as proofreading the social media posts and adding alt. text for accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve been in Portugal since Thursday<\/strong> but have had surprisingly great UX growth while here. I am staying with a new friend who I discovered does Service Design and Research Management for the Digital sector of the city of Porto<\/a>. We’ve looked over books her manager has given her and discussed the first projects she is involved with (since she just started 3 weeks ago). I was able to brainstorm more with my best friend, Chlo\u00e9, on disability access for in person experienced (as she herself is disabled) and her second hand experiences of online accessibility from friends who have access issues in that realm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chlo\u00e9 also helped me refine my ideas around project 4. I am deciding now between two ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A) An app\/website that identifies legislation affecting the consumers area of concern with the environment, and providing them with the correct conact information and a pre-filled script to call their government officials in opposition or in support of the bill currently being decided on. This would then count towards points for how many calls you make and the points add up to discounts with businesses and\/or other rewards. It would act similarily to duolingo, offering tiers of how active they want to be with calling (making one call a day, two a week, one every two weeks or four calls a month. This can also be self set by the consumer). Then pop-up notifications would remind them to make a call with encouraging messages of the short amount of time it takes in comparison to the big difference it makes. This would be mainly for activists as well as people who want to be involved in sustainability on a level larger then themselves but are unsure how to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B) A dating app that connects sustainable people based on their environmental values. This takes inspiration from hinge and tinder as well as the social aspect of instagram and strava. The home profile people would see before matching is all prompts related to sustainability. You would earn your likes to match with others by doing sustainable actions, getting them verified by the app, and those likes would remain for a certain duration. Each day would start with 5 likes. There are then badges and actions you complete and earn that get you likes to match with others. The more involved the action (ex: donating a clothing item versus organising a litter pick) would correlate with how many likes it is worth (5 vs 30, respectively). Doing these actions pins the badge to your social profile, which people can view after you two have matched. The app, once you matched, will suggest a sustainable date activity and poll if you met up with that person (which could possibly interact with a sustainable business by offering a coupon to have the date at their restaurant, activity, etc). If you respond and explain what you did, giving the feedback earns you more likes. This could easily be made into another version that is for friends as well. Either would build community, make connections, fulfill a base need, reaffirm someones values, and contribute in small actions to the betterment of the climate. This would be for an audience that already values sustainability and wants to expand their network of people and to feel a sense of connections to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting<\/strong> on this third project, I can identify a few things I struggle with: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since I missed the second project which explained user testing, I haven’t done any for my projects. I feel hesitant that I will do something wrong or gather data in an incorrect way so that it skews the findings. Also, taking designs or thoughts out in the world to be tested is fear inducing. I’m in need of some advice on how to get over that hump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am getting overly caught up in the visual aspect, so i have less prototypes and experimentation because I find one thing and zero my focus on it. That’s how I’m currently feeling with the third project; I zero’d in on a design and now feel like I’ve hit a blockage. I’ve found that making sketch mockups feel better but differentiating between lo and hi fi is more difficult for me. I want to add a visual brand identity right away. But that then brings us to the problem stated at the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could use more tips on how to work smarter, not harder. I’m spending a lot of time (read: a lot of time) working, but don’t feel I’m getting as much progress out of it versus the time put in. How do you know when to stop research and move on to the next phase? How do you know when you’re going down a path that is inconsistent or not adding to the work you’ve been doing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
