Siân Wong From Tommy

\ Talk Series \

Siân Wong is a Graphic Communication alumni who is currently a creative at Tommy. Tommy is a creative and production studio offering advertising services focused on experiential, social, AR and out-of-home experiences.

Starting at Tommy as an intern junior designer, then art director, and now mid-weight creative, Siân talked about her personal journey and experiences in each of the job roles.

Siân’s talk was the best one I ever attended so far. Her presentation was detailed and informative offering a useful insight in the available job roles and types of projects. She also went into further detail explaining the hierarchy within the company and the different line of work attributed to each position.

The description of the studio versus the creatives, gave me a better understanding of the industry and what I would be interested in. The studio are the execution minions who get the job done, whilst creatives are more focused on ideas and communication. Keeping in mind the work I’ve done and following my Sync the City experience, I believe I’m more of an ideas person. I enjoy more the thrill of researching, exploring and experimenting. I often lose interest when it gets to the stressful part of execution. The OCD particularity inherited does not help that process neither.

Siân mocked her silly way of communicating an animation storyboard using a blue tack ball stop animation and some black and white sketches. A creative has to ‘make ideas as clear as possible’. This was a most encouraging advice.
