While I already had some ideas about improvements before the tests, the results further solidified my concerns.

A significant issue was the categorization of products on the website. For instance, the bath salts I had usability testers search for were placed in the Christmas stocking fillers section, which isn’t the most intuitive location. During my heuristic markup analysis, I also observed that many product images lacked context in terms of size, making it challenging for users to gauge the product’s dimensions. This, in my opinion, is a crucial feature for online shoppers.

Furthermore, I identified issues related to accessibility. The text on the website appeared small and tightly packed, potentially causing difficulties for people with vision impairments. For example, the use of small black text on a bright white background may not be suitable for individuals with Irlen Syndrome, a condition affecting about 30% of the population. They often find black text on a white background uncomfortable due to visual cortex sensitivity to specific wavelengths. While this might not affect the majority of users, considering accessibility is an essential aspect of website design, particularly for those with disabilities. It appeared that the website design leaned more toward aesthetics rather than prioritizing convenience for disabled users, which I believe is a fundamental consideration in the design process for online shopping sites.

Following the Evaluate and Iterate project and the completion of usability tests, I began formulating design recommendations for the website creators to enhance their site.
