On November 1st, we had the privilege of hosting a lecture by the highly talented Greg Quinton. This lecture held special significance for me as I discovered that he was one of the main producers of the graphics book ‘A Smile in the Mind,’ which I had previously used in my research for the reflective journal project in my first year.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

During his lecture, Quinton highlighted the book’s role in elevating the understanding of ideas, a vital aspect of learning in the field of graphics. He also delved into the concept of “Wit,” emphasising its role in using words and images in an inventive and creative way to create humour and engage the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What truly made this lecture remarkable was Greg Quinton himself. He was charismatic, humorous, engaging, and an overall captivating speaker. He shared his belief in a quote often attributed to Frank Sinatra, “I’m a great believer in luck… The harder I work, the more luck I have.” This inspirational perspective underlines the idea that hard work leads to success, a principle I’m eager to embrace in my future endeavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quinton explored the multifaceted nature of Wit and its impact on the audience, describing how it combines thoughts, influences branding, sells products, and leaves a lasting impression. His examples and phrases were truly inspirational, urging me to incorporate more Wit into my work due to its clever and effective nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He introduced the concept of a “happy tree” where three key elements are essential for a project’s success: client trust, a sufficient budget, and the quality of work. Without these, he asserted that a project is unlikely to thrive. He illustrated the importance of the ‘happy tree’ by sharing an example of firing Ferrari as a client due to their disruptive nature, emphasizing the need to prioritize one’s well-being and values over a prestigious client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, Quinton shared some of his favorite one-liners related to design, offering valuable insights. He stressed that graphic designers are not artists but problem solvers, tasked with resolving client issues. He encouraged us to be our own harshest critics, asserting that self-honesty leads to growth. Quinton underscored the significance of infusing “soul” into every brand and product, emphasising the need for substance and thoughtful design. Lastly, he advised working with individuals who are more knowledgeable and skilled, as it fosters continuous learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, I found this lecture to be exceptional and thoroughly enjoyable. The engagement, content, and Greg Quinton’s persona, along with his anecdotes, made the entire lecture captivating from start to finish. I would go as far as to say that it was my favorite lecture from both this year and the previous year’s series. It was undeniably inspiring, and I would be eager to learn more about his experiences as a designer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
