This lecture was eye opening because it allowed me to see how a real designer thinks and works in his company. It was truly inspiring to me that he just sees the “art in everyday life” and how he sees things “not as they are but what they could be”. This inspired me to not think so literally about my design ideas. An example of him “not seeings things as they are but as they could be” was that he used a raw potato as a stamp because it creates some interesting patterns and shapes because you never know how it will turn out.

Carter believes in “happy accidents” meaning that some of the best things happen by accident, not necessarily how you planned them but they turn out better than what you had planned. Or, it could also mean that he just sees the art in everything so anything could be a “happy accident” for example, he was talking about when he bought a vase and it came in a little brown box, covered in different coloured tapes, he realised it was an interesting looking box, so took it apart, and that became one of his collages. I find this fascinating because that’s just not how I think, I would just see it as a box, so it’s interesting to see how he perceives things in such an artistic way.

Phil Carter sees art as a form of communication. He believes you can show what you want or need, in the form of just a small drawing, or even a very detailed painting can be a form of communication, which I believe too. He described this from his own experiences where he was in a foreign country and the shop worker couldn’t understand what he was asking for, he drew a small picture on the palm of his hand of what he wanted and the worker understood. I find this fascinating because that wouldn’t initially come to mind when I was in that situation, even though I do believe art is a great form of communication, I wouldn’t think to use it as a form of explaining what I need in a shop. It is truly inspiring to me, he doesn’t see design as a job he sees it as his life.

This is one of his examples of work that I really enjoyed because I just think it’s so clever and unique. This is a Christmas card he designed that just shows the whites of Santa’s suit, yet is is abundantly clear what the image is when looking at it. Carter stated he and his colleague got the inspiration from this from looking out of the window and seeing construction workers outside in the dark, and their jackets were illuminated because of the reflective white lines on their jackets. This is where he got the idea to only include the whites from Santas suit as the design on a plain red card, so it conveys the message of Santa and Christmas without being so straight forward, it kind of gives the reader a ‘smile in the mind’ moment, where they think it’s clever.

Overall, I found this lecture very interesting because I love to hear about how he came up with the ideas he did and why he made the decisions he chose. I saw this same lecture this time least year, in my first year at NUA and it was just as fascinating the second time round!

On Wednesday 26th October, we had our second lecture from Phil Carter, the same one we had in first year, to kick off the lecture series.
