user testing workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Anticipated use &#8211; actual use &#8211; after use<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UX designers look at the actual use creating satisfaction for users &#8211; efficiency and effectiveness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Satisfaction &#8211; tested through questionnaires but efficiency and efficacy can be tested through user tests&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Efficiency &#8211; is it quick and easy&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effectiveness &#8211; can it be done&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These will cause an increase or decrease the satisfaction level&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which can therefore increase or decrease a users reported experience level&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The main thing to look for when user testing is efficiency and effectiveness&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You will find other things but don\u2019t ask about them\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tasks&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Tests at the level of the task you want them to achieve&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The problem area would be the sub tasks &#8211; working through the website Test the whole process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walk them past the known problem area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What does the user need to do at a really high level that\u2019s nothing to do with the interactive system?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask a question for the task &#8211; e.g. what would you do if you needed to buy a T-shirt with delivery on or before Friday&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mirror real life as much as possible&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be broad with questions &#8211; don\u2019t ask specific questions\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inappropriate tasks&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Pretender tasks &#8211; e.g. \u201cyou\u2019re a bank worker from Spain\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Silly test tasks &#8211; e.g. \u201cwhen using the checkout can you use the name mr banana man\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Derivative tasks &#8211;&nbsp; e.g. \u201clet\u2019s assume that by mistake you added two products to your basket\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tests tasks with clues &#8211;&nbsp; e.g. \u201cwhat is the opening time of the cafe in cafe\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In precise test tasks &#8211;&nbsp; e.g. \u201cfind and read the terms and conditions\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Appropriate things to say in a user test&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>What would you like to do next&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Say as little as possible<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>impartially\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>We must not agree or show any hints to the user as to what we think\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not nod or smile<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not give clues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No leading questions\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>We must be careful with our wording&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not bias your results&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put emphasis back on the user&nbsp;\n<ul>\n<li>What would you do next&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are your options now&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m sorry I can\u2019t help you as you don\u2019t want to influence what you do next&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Low and high fidelity&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>We should test out designs as much as possible&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Usability gets better over time&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We should test our designs when they are low, mid and high fidelity&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is easier to make changes to hand drawn prototypes and low fidelity&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less changes should need to be made at high fidelity&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We test to uncover and fix problems&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not to validate that we as designers got it right&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re learning huge amounts every time you test your designs&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider if you are testing your designs in the right way&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Process: planning, conducting, reporting&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>moderated in person, remote or unmoderated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test plan&nbsp;\n<ul>\n<li>goal of the test&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Number of test participants&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approx session length&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time plan&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cost estimate&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recruiting participants&nbsp;\n<ul>\n<li>check back to out personas&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recruitment screener &#8211; could make a survey and send it out and ask simple questions about people who are available for your tests to make sure they fit your personas &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Book participants&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write a test script\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>briefing\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pre-session interview<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tasks&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post session interview<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pilot it &#8211; a friend or colleague goes through it to makes sure it will work or will be understood&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What should a briefing consist of&nbsp;\n<ul>\n<li>Welcome the participant&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introduce yourself&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain what they are there for&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We are not testing you, we are testing the interface &#8211; you can\u2019t do anything wrong&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please think out loud during the sessions as it helps me to understand your thought processes&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m recording the sessions to help me analyse things afterwards &#8211; might need to sign something or send in advance&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re feeling uncomfortable at any point we can talk a break&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please consider what you see today to be confidential &#8211;
