This talk was from two female designers: Katherine and Lily who work on Magpie studio, ones a junior designer ones a senior designer.

They were really interesting to listen to as they gave lots of advice and spoke about how to make your name more known and what we can do as women to make ourselves heard.

They stated:

• Design is a journey – it takes time, practice and persistence
• Learn from mistakes, listen and try again
• Everyone’s journey is unique
• Become indispensable

They also mentioned a quote which really inspired me as a women in this industry because it made me think that what I am working towards isn’t just for my own gain but for those who will follow after me.

They also mentioned the problems women may face:

• Subconscious bias
• Age and gender bias
• Lack of role models higher up
• Imposter syndrome
• Not having your opinions heard
• Not enough flexible work for parents
• Lack of confidence

They then spoke about what we can do to help:

• Find a mentor
• Suggest ways of making your workplace more inclusive
• Don’t think your under qualified
• Share knowledge and resources
• Lift other women up with you
• Make connections and connect others
• Talk about pay and ask for transparency

After they also spoke about the top 5 things that would get a employers attention

• Have killer ideas
• Leave behind something that would leave a good impression
• Be a story teller
• Collaborate with others
• Be humble
